The Bug War ended twenty years ago and Space Marine Captain Anton Slate retired, took what was left of his platoon and began a career as one of the most infamous smugglers in the galaxy, hauling anything for the right price. He built a reputation of being fair but ruthless when dealing with the underbelly of galactic society.
Ten years ago, he and his crew teamed up with Onyx, a notorious thief and cat burglar, for what was supposed to be the biggest score in their lives. Things went terribly wrong when Charles Anderson, a rival of Slate's, kidnapped and murdered Onyx' sister Helen.
Slate becomes obsessed with finding and killing Anderson, while trying his best, with the help of his crew, to protect Onyx, because he thinks he is responsible for making sure the same thing that happened to Helen doesn't happen to her. She doesn't make it easy for him, though, because she blames Slate for letting Helen die and won't let him near her, so he assigns one of his crew to secretly watch over her while he hunts Anderson. Onyx, however has her own agenda concerning Anderson and spends her every waking moment plotting his downfall.
Who will get to Anderson first? Can either Slate or Onyx survive the demons eating away at their hearts and souls or will they both be destroyed by their burning need for revenge?
